Becoming a Certified Case Manager: What is a CCM? Why should I become a CCM?

What is a Certified Case Manager?

A board-certified case manager works to optimize a client’s health needs. The Certified Case Manager (CCM) Exam is developed by the Commission for Case Manager Certification (CCMC). The exam measures the skills necessary to excel as a certified case manager. The CCM is the gold standard of case manager certifications.

Why should I become a CCM?

A CCM certification can help you grow in your current position. RN case manager jobs are in demand. Chronic illnesses affect Americans at higher rates than ever before. The elderly population is growing. These patients have complex health care needs. At the same time, health care costs are on the rise. The demand for nurse case managers to help these patients while saving costs has never been greater.

A case manager certification will also make you more attractive to future employers. According to the CCMC, 40 percent of employers required certification in 2014, a 14 percent increase from 2004, when only 26 percent of employers required certification. Per the CCMC, 30 percent of employers offered higher pay for board-certified case managers: anywhere from fifty cents to $10 an hour more.

Who is eligible to take the CCM exam?

To qualify for the exam, you must have a current licensure in any health or human services discipline permitting independent assessment of a client in the United States or its territories. Instead of licensure, you may qualify if you have a bachelor’s or advanced degree in certain health or human services disciplines.

You must also have employment experience: either twelve months of case management experience under the supervision of a board-certified case manager, twelve months of experience supervising case managers, or twenty-four months of full-time case management experience. All experience must be obtained in the United States.

Finally, you must be a person of good moral character. Expect to answer questions about your professional conduct, honesty, and any criminal background.

Taking the CCM Exam: What do I need to know? What is the exam really like?

When can I take the CCM exam?

The CCM exam is offered three times a year. If you are eligible and approved to take the exam, you must take it at the first available testing window. You may defer one time for a fee of $85. If you wish to defer again, you must apply again and pay the nonrefundable application fee again.

How much does it cost to take the CCM exam?

The application fee is nonrefundable. If you are found ineligible to take the CCM exam, your examination fee will be refunded. You may pay a fee to reschedule your exam. There is no cost to reschedule if you do so thirty days or more in advance. From six to thirty days before the exam, it will cost $25 to reschedule. From two to five days before the exam, it will cost $85 to reschedule. To defer to the next exam window, the fee is $85. For those with special accommodations who miss their exam appointment, the fee is $200. If you do not pass the exam, the retake fee is $185. The cost to have your exam rescored is $50.

How many questions are on the CCM exam?

The CCM exam consists of 180 questions. Only 150 of these questions are scored; 30 are unscored pretest questions. These questions are included by the CCMC to test their suitability for inclusion in future tests. You will have no way of knowing which questions are unscored, so treat every question like it counts.

How long is the CCM exam?

You will have three hours to complete the test. Before the timed portion of the exam begins, you will take a brief tutorial. There are no scheduled breaks during the exam.

What type of questions are on the CCM exam?

The questions on the CCM are multiple-choice with four answer choices each. The CCM has no guessing penalty. That is, if you answer a question incorrectly, no points are deducted from your score; you simply do not get credit for that question. Therefore, you should always guess if you do not know the answer to a question.

Can I reschedule my CCM exam?

CCM Exam Scores: What do I need to pass? What scores do I need to get into my school of choice? What happens if I fail?

When will I get my CCM score?

Once you have completed your test, the computer you are working on will display your pass/fail score. You may print a hard copy of your score to take with you. You will receive your official results electronically four weeks after the end of the testing window. Remember, you may not use your CCM credential until you have received your official results, even if you pass the test.

How is the CCM exam scored?

The CCM is a pass/fail test. Of the 180 questions on the test, 150 are scored. Your raw score is the total number of the 150 scored questions that you answer correctly. That score is then scaled based on the level of difficulty of the questions you answered correctly. The minimum passing scaled score is 500. You will only receive a score report if you do NOT pass the exam. The report will include the candidate’s score.

If you pass the test, you will receive a certificate in the mail about four weeks after the end of the testing window. You will not receive a score report if you pass.

Can I retake the CCM exam if I don’t pass?

If you do not pass the exam, you can schedule a retake for the next cycle for $185. If you do not retake the test in the next consecutive cycle, you must apply and pay the $200 application fee again AND the $185 test fee, for a total of $385.
